Apollo Hospitals Expansion Gets New Projects Director

TL;DR — Quick Summary

Upasana Kamineni Konidela has taken charge as Director – Projects at Apollo Hospitals. She will oversee and coordinate hospital development, expansion and upgrade projects across India as Apollo advances an estimated ₹8,600-crore expansion programme.

Apollo Hospitals has appointed Upasana Kamineni Konidela as Director – Projects, giving her a key role in the planning and delivery of the group’s hospital infrastructure projects as Apollo advances an estimated ₹8,600-crore expansion programme across India.

In her new role, Upasana will work closely with Apollo’s leadership, clinical teams and project partners on the development of new hospitals, expansion of existing facilities and upgrades of current hospital infrastructure.

Focus on Hospital Expansion and Upgrades

Her mandate covers projects from the design and planning stage through to commissioning. Alongside physical expansion, Apollo said the role will focus on improving patient-facing aspects of hospital design, including clearer signage, easier navigation, efficient clinical spaces and greater comfort for patients and families.

The appointment comes as Apollo moves ahead with a large-scale expansion programme covering both new facilities and brownfield projects at existing hospitals.

Apollo's current programme has an estimated total project cost of around ₹8,600 crore, including approximately ₹1,565 crore for listed brownfield expansion projects.

Expansion Across Major Indian Markets

The planned projects span established healthcare markets as well as emerging urban centres. Locations identified in Apollo's plans include Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, Chennai, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Lucknow, Varanasi, Indore, Guwahati and Ranchi, among others.

The company has not yet disclosed the specific project-wise budgets and responsibilities that will fall under Upasana's mandate.

The expansion is expected to increase healthcare capacity while supporting the creation of opportunities for doctors, nurses and other skilled healthcare professionals in the markets where Apollo develops new facilities.

Patient Experience as a Design Priority

A key element of Upasana's role will be bringing greater attention to how patients and families experience hospital environments.

Her stated priorities include intuitive navigation, better wayfinding, efficient clinical workflows and spaces that support healthcare teams in delivering care.

"Good hospital design has a human purpose," Upasana said, highlighting the importance of making hospitals easier for patients to navigate while creating supportive environments for families and clinical teams.

Building on Apollo's Healthcare Legacy

Upasana Kamineni Konidela has previously been associated with Apollo's community and CSR initiatives. Apollo Executive Vice Chairperson Preetha Reddy also highlighted her involvement in healthcare, preventive health and community initiatives, as well as her role in bringing Apollo's 400-bed hospital in Hyderabad's Financial District to life.

Upasana said her new responsibility would build on the vision of her grandfather and Apollo founder Dr Prathap C. Reddy, who established Apollo with the objective of making advanced healthcare more accessible in India.

She added that the next phase of Apollo's growth presents an opportunity to combine thoughtful hospital design, clinical excellence and compassionate care while ensuring that new projects serve the communities around them.
